My puppy doesn't have an other dog to play with.Well, I guess his education is up to you then. Playing with your puppy should be a big part of your bonding with him. Many owners think "play" means letting their puppy just go crazy. Here in Texas we have recess, and the kids go crazy for about 15 mins a day. But after school there is probably two hours of organize football practice for the boys. Volleyball or Basketball for the girls. All of which has rules, regulations, and discipline. Teamwork! suggest you do the same with your dog -- find a team sport. All dogs love to run, they all love to chase things. Set up a lure course? We have plenty of pasture land, so it was easy to find a place. We cut the grass very short and actually planted a golf course type of grass so it is smooth sailing. The equipment cost me about $300 but it is portable and of "course", they love it. The neighbor brings their Yorkie over and he will chase it. Play "fetch". Any dog can learn. Attach a string to the end of a long stick, then tie a soft stuffed animal -- a plush chicken. Or use a fishing rod. Dangle (or cast) the chicken in front of the puppy and move it around in a circle. Teach them to be a drug dog! Turn empty cans upside down, with a treat, or something under one. Then they have to smell it out. Lots of rewards and praise when they found it. Buda finds money! Put a dollar under one of the cans; he will find it. Agility people seems like they are having fun. Traditional obedience training with the eye toward competing in obedience trials is fun. That was my first dog event as a child -- 4th grade. Italian Greyhound FAQs . . . |
